When is the best time to visit?

Zanzibar works all year — each season feels different.

June – October

Dry season

The most popular period. Generally dry and sunny — excellent for beach days, island excursions, snorkelling and diving, and the easiest season to combine Zanzibar with a northern Tanzania safari. It is also the busiest, so accommodation and activities cost more and popular spots feel livelier.

November

Short rains

A lovely time to visit. Plenty of sunshine, with occasional short showers possible. A good balance between good weather and fewer crowds.

December – February

Warm and sunny

Generally warm and well suited to a Zanzibar holiday. December is particularly lively around the festive season, while January and February are popular for sunshine, beaches and water activities.

March – May

Long rains

The long rainy season. Heavier rainfall can affect outdoor plans, so some travellers avoid it — but there are fewer visitors and travel costs are often lower. If you don't mind occasional rain, Zanzibar is still rewarding in a quieter way.

How to get to Zanzibar

Fly directly into Abeid Amani Karume International Airport (ZNZ), or connect from Kilimanjaro, Arusha, Dar es Salaam or other domestic airports. A ferry from Dar es Salaam takes about two hours. If you are finishing a northern safari, flying from the mainland is usually the easiest option.

Your budget depends on accommodation, transport, restaurants and activities.

Budget rooms: approximately $20–$30 per night
Budget hotels: approximately $35–$70
Mid-range: approximately $80–$300
Luxury: $400 and above

Prices are indicative and change with season, location and property. Eating at local restaurants is one of the best ways to experience the island while keeping daily costs manageable. Excursions — Stone Town tours, spice tours, snorkelling, boat trips, diving, dolphin experiences, dhow cruises and water sports — are quoted separately.

How long should you stay?

We recommend at least five to seven days so you are not rushing. A longer stay lets you combine different parts of the island instead of one single spot — for example Stone Town, then Nungwi or Kendwa, then Paje or Jambiani. That way you get the history, the northern beaches, local culture, nightlife and the quieter southeast coast.
