Uganda: an hour with the gorillas

Nothing on the plains prepares you for it. You walk into thick montane forest behind a tracker, and then the forest opens and a family of mountain gorillas is simply there, going about its morning.

Permits first

Gorilla permits are limited and issued per family per day. We secure yours before anything else is booked, because the permit decides the lodge, the sector and the dates.

The trek itself

Expect anywhere from one to six hours of walking on steep, muddy ground at around 2,000m, then one hour with the family. Porters are available and we recommend one — it is good work locally and it makes the day easier.

Beyond Bwindi

Golden monkey tracking in Mgahinga, chimpanzees in Kibale, tree-climbing lions in Ishasha and boat cruises on the Kazinga Channel — added when your days allow.

Plan with us

Tell us when you can travel. We'll tell you where the good light is.

Every itinerary is drawn by hand in our Arusha office — routing, pacing, camps and honest budget ranges. One conversation is usually enough to know whether we're the right fit.
