Mount Meru
Tanzania's second mountain, inside Arusha National Park, walked with an armed ranger because buffalo and giraffe live on the lower slopes. On its own it is a superb four days; before Kilimanjaro it is the best acclimatisation you can buy.

Through giant heather to Saddle hut, with an afternoon walk up Little Meru.
Pre-dawn ridge walk to Socialist Peak, then down to Miriakamba.
Descent to Momella gate and transfer back to Arusha.
